Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is a very large nerve that exits the spinal column and runs down the back of the legs, eventually to the feet and heel. Because it is so large, lots of smaller nerves exit off it (think branches that come off the trunk of a tree). Irritation of this nerve can cause many symptoms including pain, burning, irritation, stabbing, radiating or numbness to name a few. The pain may begin at the very bottom of the back, top of the buttocks or below the buttocks and run into the back of the leg. Left untreated, sciatica can be felt down the calf and even into the heel or under the foot.
