One of the most common causes of headaches is called a "cervicogenic" which means it originates in the neck and not the head itself.
The source of pain stems from structures around the neck which may be impinged or damaged. These structures can include joints, ligaments, muscles, and cervical discs, all of which have complex nerve endings. When these structures are damaged, the nerve endings send pain signals up the pathway from the nerves of the neck to the brain.
The first step is to determine what kind of headache you are having. Is it a migraine headache, tension headache, cluster headache, sinus headache or is it stemming from dehydration or stress? Once we determine the type and source of the headache, we use a combination of treatment to correct the underlying problem. Many of our patients tell us their headaches are eliminated permanently.
If you have frequent headaches, go a step further and think about the process. If you are in pain, your body is telling you there is something wrong. Taking medication or getting injections to cover the pain will only mask the problem and allow the underlying issue to get worse. Instead of quieting the message, listen to the body and correct the problem before it gets worse!
